The Olympic Sporting Legacy – What’s Next?

So, the Olympics are over. The country can finally breathe a sigh of relief after all the furious excitement, the triumphant tears and the frantic success of the last few weeks. But it’s not forgotten. The London 2012 Olympic Games have left behind a sporting legacy to energise and inspire our young British athletes, with a new focus on encouraging sport and competition in schools, clubs and leisure centres across the country. Our Olympic legacy is at the heart of health and education policies, helping youngsters from all backgrounds develop a healthy attitude towards competition and achievement – giving them the opportunity to participate in activities and become a member of our new sporting communities.

Olympic Success Sparks New Interest in Sports

Team GB completely exceeded all expectations in the 2012 Games, with an unprecedented 65 medals won by our impressive and assiduous athletes – 29 of them gold! With the country on the edge of their seats watching success after success in events ranging from athletics and rowing to dressage and shooting, it’s no wonder that sports clubs and leisure centres across the UK have experienced a huge spike in interest. Sports clubs that offer taekwondo and boxing are receiving more enquiries than ever before from young women, and our dominance in the cycling events has inspired many people to get out their bikes and don their lycra. You can see it everywhere as more and more cyclists are taking to the road in rush hour and reviving long neglected cycle paths.

Sustaining the Legacy of London 2012

So what’s next – how do we encourage this new found interest, and sustain the attention of our next generation of British athletes? Sports clubs need to find new ways to make sporting activities fun and enjoyable and create a community for young hopefuls to become a part of. Investing in facilities and refurbishing old pitches and track and field areas will provide a home ground to practice and train in.
