Female celebrities take to the netball court for charity!
As we embark on a new year, many of us are deciding on a few resolutions to make sure 2015 is one of the best! A common resolution which features on most lists is to do more exercise and become more active by joining a gym or taking up a new sport. In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of netball across the country, with more and more people choosing to join their local team. Not only is this an effective way of becoming more active, it provides the perfect opportunity to meet new people. Since its launch in 2010, the award-winning ‘Back to Netball’ programme has brought 50,000 people back to the game, encouraging women nationwide to return to the sport. A host of celebrities took part in Back to Netball classes to brush up on their skills before participating in a celebrity netball match played at The Olympic Village in December last year. The event saw Cancer Research UK join forces with England Netball, sports bra brand Freya Active and Sky Sports to organise an all-female charity match to raise funds for Cancer Research UK’s life saving work while promoting positive women’s health. Hosted by Laura Whitmore, two teams of celebrities (including girlband Neon Jungle, DJ Gemma Cairney and Made in Chelsea’s Fran Newman-Young) got together for a fast-paced match which entertained a crowd of over 6,000 people. All funds raised from ticket sales and donations made on the day went towards Cancer Research’s incredible work. Furthermore, the match raised awareness of the statistic that more than four in 10 cancers could be prevented by leading a healthier, physically active lifestyle. This doesn’t mean you should be rushing to sign up for marathons, simply enjoying a casual game of netball is a great way of being active without paying a hefty price. Teresa Hicks from Cancer Research UK said: “Our work never stops to promote positive women’s health and raise awareness about the risks of cancer. We’re delighted to have come together with Freya Active, England Netball and Sky Sports all of whom are advocates of this great cause. We are incredibly grateful to all these well-known female faces for making this event possible.” In November last year, ITV’s Text Santa fundraising event also featured a celebrity netball match which saw cast members from Emmerdale and Coronation Street battling it out to be the winning team! After a nail-biting match, Emmerdale triumphed with a 23-18 victory to avenge last year’s loss, encouraging many viewers and fans to donate to the Text Santa charity and be proactive in joining their local netball team. The involvement of celebrities in these charity netball matches can add a great deal of interest from the public in the sport, as well as proving to be a brilliant way of generating support for these charities.
